How can we be so cruel?

I can't stop crying since last night. I was having my casual evening, blogging, chatting, watching TV, when I bumped into Channel 4's documentary Animals. I just saw one scene, ONE SCENE and since last night I'm crying like a baby. I can't stop!

They were showing a hidden camera report: in a lab a man and a woman were torturing a little monkey. They were pulling its tail, grabbing its head and shouting at it. The woman was holding a needle and was shouting at the little defenseless monkey "You tried to fucking bite me! I will remember that!" Finally they immobilized the poor creature and injected the fucking whatever into it. Sorry, I don't usually swear, but this made me absolutely hysterical with fury.
I wanted to be magically transported over there and blow up this company into dust, after I had freed the animals of course. If your heart can take it you can watch similar reports on
PETA TV.

It's nice to have a quiet life, go to work, have a home, blog about The Who, go to my Rachel concerts, be happy and oblivient. Hell, it's the best thing in the world!
But after watching this I want to get more conscious and active, stop buying products that come from companies which test on animals and donate as much as I can afford to organisations like PETA and Greenpeace. Please, if you feel like I do let's all support these organisations and their cause. Click on the links and LET'S SEE ACTION!

I have listened to different arguments here and there:

  • "Animal testing helps medicine to save human lives" - My answer: These pharmaceutical conglomerates can spend some money to find other ways to test their products.
  • "People are dying around the world and you care about animals?" (said the fat lady in the fur coat) - My answer: I'm sorry to say that, it may sound horrible, but I think sometimes I care more for the animals than for humans. Animals are defenseless and not as intelligent as humans (although I may start doubting that). Since we humans destroy their natural environments they are OUR responsibility to treat them with respect.
The whales are nearly extinct, they hunt them for leather. People in China eat dogs. Cosmetic companies drop mascara into little rabbits' eyes. Hunters kill beautiful birds to get a kick out of it. Dogfood companies test their foods into dogs who get ill and die. Chicken and turkeys are cramped in confined spaces and massively slaughtered for consuming.

I eat meat.

HOW CAN WE BE SO CRUEL?

The best thing we can do is choose not to choose. In other words we have a choice where to spend our money. Any company that promotes these acts should be avoided. Spend no money with them. A little research reveals these companies. Peta and Greenpeace will also. Thanks for bringing this topic out. We sometimes forget about these things. I will never be tolerant of abuse to animals.

Hey Marietta!

Omg so awful!!! I have been reading on the study of animals for years, & I read how they try to make it legit. By saying that it's all apart of the chain, that things die for this, that people die for that. Though everything has a purpose here, & I don't think killing, torturing or anything of that nature. Was what was instore for these animals when they were brought into this world! Thanks for the review, I did enjoy reading it & finding out a little more.

On another note, thanks for your post on my blog! I wanted to say really quick, that you can watch "Kept" on Vh1. Just go to www.vh1.com/kept & you can watch almost the whole episode of every weekly show! Anyway, I hope that you feel a little better. I know that it is hard, but remember that thanks to the new technology & people being noticing more. That these fuckers are becoming noticed & will pay!

Lots of Love

Dear Marietta

Your post has touched me.

I feel exactly the same way you do. I cannot condone what any of the pharmaceutical conglomerates do.
They make drugs, torture helpless animals & have a stranglehold on our society as a whole. They also own the medical industry.

As you know, I am an animal-lover & I will not tolerate abuse of any kind.
The way I value & practice the "Three R's" I, like Joeboy choose not to choose.

I know how you are feeling.

Love
Dale

I eat meat too and I always will. I would't wear furs though even if I could afford it. I would much rather cuddle the real thing, alive.

That is extremely sad though! That is horrifying.

Marietta,
I can't read this. I just read the first sentence about the monkey and said that's it. I can't go on. I know people can be VERY cruel. It makes me sick. As my mother says, every dog has their day and they will have theirs!.

I agree with Joe, Marietta. We need to become informed, and once we are armed with facts, we can decided where to spend our money.
I am and have been vegeterian for almost 15 years, and anyone who has seen the photos on my blog can see that I am not starving in the least or even look remotely unhealthy.
I still wear leather sports shoes, but nothing else is animal made. I don't like preaching to others and never mind when people bring and eat meat in my home, since I believe each individual needs to come to their own place and time when (if ever) they will make different decisions.
I will say, though, that it is completely possible not to eat meat, and to live well.
I also think that it's strange how we can love some animals as pets and yet treat others with the same sentience with complete and utter disregard.

Thanks for putting the issue forward, Marietta.

Thank you for this post. Torturing other living beings for vanity is one of the worst crimes. Not only that, the modern human has lost all connection with nature and assumes his right to do whatever he wishes with it.

If I had upset anyone with my description I deeply apologise.
I didn't mean to do that, but I feel so disgusted and angry and I wanted to share it with you, so we can do something about it.
No pressure though...
Thank you :o)

Dear Marietta

I eat meat, too.
We, as homo sapiens, are designed to eat meat.

We, as humans, have the choice.

I choose to, because I like it.
I don't think the food chain is cruel - it's design.

Torture is cruel.

Like now, my husband is tuning his guitar at max decibels!!!!!
The kids are laughing & screaming!

Welcome to the weekend!
I can't hear a thing - oh, it's ZZ Top, now!!

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND - I HOPE YOU CAN HEAR ME...
lol

MArietta, I saw your MySpace site. It is totally great! I don't do my space. I don't think I can keep up. I have a hard enough time keeping up with lif, e-mails and Blogging. I can't add that too. Plus I tried once just to communicate with someone, but they never communicated BUT someone else did, and it was really raunchy. But yours rocks!

Hey, don't apologize for putting this here, M! This is your blog, you have a right to post whatever the F you want here! :)
I've seen things like this and I always get really upset, too. I was a vegetarian, a hard-core veg, for quite a few years. Ultimately I started eating meat again, but It was more out
of dietary issues.Torturing animals is wrong. Period.
Remember, this is your blog. If you wanted to post pics of yourself wearing a little orphan Annie wig and Groucho glasses, you can! It's your blog!
figured I'd add some comic relief there. lol :D
